Albana di Romagna - Italian White Wine

Albana di Romagna - Italian White Wine

Albana a white in a red dress.

Potent wine of noble taste, easily preserved and medium subtle: such was Albana wine according to a 13th-century treatise which added, “that this kind of grape is better in Forlì and all of Romagna”. Unmistakable for its elongated bunches and golden yellow grapes, Albana is distinctive for its sugar content that farms the basis for exceptionally fine vinification. ?

Italy’s first white to get DOCG recognition, it is today the pride of the Bologna, Ravenna, and Forli-Cesena provinces, which share 37,500 acres of specialized vineyards.

Albana di Romagna DOCG wine is obtained from vineyard grapes having the following ampelographic composition:
Albana grape: minimum 95%; Other white grape varieties allowed for cultivation in the Emilia Romagna region can contribute a maximum of 5%.

Its aptitude for aging increases proportionately to its alcohol content - from 2 to 3 years for the dry wine and ten or more for the "passito".
In its dry version, Almana goes well with seafood in general and especially with crustaceans, fish soups and broths, but it is also a fine match for white meats ( especially chicken in aspic) and foie grass.
The semi-sweet and sweet are eclectic dessert wines, traditionally served with Romagna's typical ring-shaped cake.
The "passito" wine is usually served with pastries and dried fruit, but also with cheeses streaked with green mold even sharp, or enjoyed alone as a "meditation" wine.
